Information and Collection provides high-quality, substantive and timely information, reference and documentation services to parliamentarians and their staff as well as general parliamentary information services to the public by building, managing, preserving and optimizing access to the Library’s information assets.
We are currently seeking candidates to staff the following two (2) positions: Senior Technician, Branches and Reference (stream 1) and Senior Technician, Parliament of Canada Information Service (stream 2).
The Senior Technician, Branches and Reference (stream 1), works with teams of research librarians and technicians providing reference and client services for parliamentary clients online and in person in Library branches.
The Senior Technician, Parliament of Canada Information Service (stream 2), works with a team of technicians and agents who provide information to and answer questions from the general public about the role, history and work of Parliament.
Primary responsibilities for both Senior Technicians include supporting the daily operations and delivery of client services, coaching team members, supporting new technicians in their training, assigning and monitoring the team’s workload, and completing quality assurance reviews of responses to client requests.

Note: While this position is eligible for part-time telework, regular on-site presence is required at Library of Parliament workplaces located in the National Capital Region.

The following knowledge criteria will also be evaluated:
• Knowledge of research techniques and tools used to retrieve information from catalogues, online databases and websites.
• Knowledge of best practices in providing client service in a reference and information environment, with a focus on communication with clients to clarify, understand and meet their underlying information needs.
• Knowledge of the Canadian parliamentary system, the federal government and current affairs.
• Knowledge of official parliamentary publications.
• Knowledge of quality assurance principles in a library or information centre environment.
To be considered for stream 1 and stream 2 positions, candidates must have:
• A library technician diploma, or an acceptable combination of post-secondary education, training and work experience related to the position.
• Experience delivering reference and/or information services to clients and/or the general public in a library or information centre environment.
• Experience using online or electronic information resources to access, retrieve and compile information.
• Experience supporting the training of new employees, including providing guidance and assisting with their integration into the team.
Asset(s):
• Experience in overseeing the work of a team and/or providing coaching to peers or employees.
• Experience assigning workload, coordinating and managing timelines and providing feedback on the quality of work produced.
• Experience providing recommendations to management on process improvements.
Operational Requirements applicable to Senior Technician, Branches and Reference (stream 1) only:
• The successful candidate may be required to work an evening duty shift every 4-5 weeks (during sitting weeks). These hours would be 10:30AM – 7:00PM.
Candidates retained in this selection process will be required to obtain successfully:
• A second-language evaluation (Bilingual staffing – imperative: CCC/CCC)
• A pre-employment screening
