This portfolio was established by Order in Council on July 1, 1867. It was not given statutory basis, but was recognized by the Salaries Act (Statute 31 Victoria, c. 33), first assented to May 22, 1868.

    Department Change
    Under the provisions of Statute 17-18 Elizabeth II, c. 28, assented to March 28, 1969 and in force April 1, 1969, the Minister of Finance was no longer ex officio the Receiver General of Canada; this function been transferred to the Minister of Supply and Services.

    Department Change
    Under the provisions of Statute 42 Victoria, c. 7, assented to May 15, 1879 and proclaimed in force May 20, 1879, the Minister of Finance was to be ex officio the Receiver General of Canada.
  • 1996-07-12
    Department Change
    Under the provisions of Statute 42-43-44-45 Elizabeth II, c. 16 (1996), assented to June 20, 1996 and in force July 12, 1996, the Minister of Public Works and Government Services is the Receiver General for Canada.
  • 1879-05-19
    Department Change
    Under the provisions of Statute 42 Victoria, c. 7, assented to May 15, 1879 and proclaimed in force May 20, 1879, the Minister of Finance was to be ex officio the Receiver General of Canada. The Department of the Receiver-General ceases to be a separate department and merges with the Department of Finance who serves as ex-officio Receiver-General.
