This portfolio was established by Order in Council on July 1, 1867. It was given statutory basis by Statute 32-33 Victoria, c. 4, assented to June 22, 1869 (pp.20). By this Act the Minister of Finance was ex officio the Chairman of the Treasury Board, which remained a committee of the Privy Council.

    Under the provisions of Statute 42 Victoria, c. 7, assented to May 15, 1879 and proclaimed in force May 20, 1879, the Minister of Finance was to be ex officio the Receiver General of Canada.
